Summary: This literature review study found there are significant differences in best practices for adult learners' comprehension and retention of knowledge which could be tailored to with OER due to their customizability. Additionally, adult learners also deal with misrepresentation, lack of representation, or even insulting cultural content in textbooks, which can also be addressed by customization to the benefit of adult learners. They found research on OER and adult learners remains underdeveloped and recommended more qualitative research to better understand the experiences of adult learners and additional best practices afforded them by OER.
